South Coast, NSW

Last month, we adventured down to the South Coast of NSW for a much-needed beachside weekend away. All five of us came which made our getaway even more fun. Eddy & I had grown up going on family holidays down to the South Coast, however, we’d somehow never visited Mollymook or Milton. With mum & dad not having been down there for years and George spending most South Coast trips down in Gerringong, we felt like it was about time we visited.

And we are so glad we did! We were so lucky with the weather & it also felt like we were there on a particularly relaxing weekend. Or maybe it was because we were lucky enough to stay at Rick Stein’s Place (organised through the magnificent Bannisters Hotels). It was all pure magic and we cannot wait to get back down there as soon as we have a reason to :) the best thing is that it’s only 3.5 hours away from Sydney. Ideal!

See more below of our amazing stay.

Bannisters Hotels

There are 2 main sections of Bannisters – Bannisters by the Sea and the newly opened Bannisters Pavilion.

Bannisters By The Sea is a luxury boutique hotel positioned on a cliff top above beautiful Mollymook Beach. Once a 70’s motel it has been beautifully refurbished and offers an assortment of rooms some with ocean views and private balconies. This is also where you’ll find the famous Rick Stein’s restaurant which serves the freshest seafood on the South Coast. Unfortunately we didn’t get the chance to try it as it was fully booked…next time it will certainly be at the top of our list! There’s also a beautiful wet edge pool that overlooks the ocean with a poolside cocktail bar and café. Plus an in-house day spa that is also at the top of our list for next time (mine & mum’s list haha).

Bannisters Pavilion opened just recently in December and has 32 rooms and 2 beautifully decorated penthouse suites. It is just 900m from Bannisters By The Sea and is elegant, modern and super stylish. Decorated to absolute perfection, we loved the gorgeously breezy rooftop bar and grill with the suspended pool and rows of comfortable sun lounges. We spent a super relaxing and sunny afternoon here sampling a wonderful menu of delicious Mediterranean and Mexican inspired food with cocktails, wine and specialised beers. What could be better!?

Rick's Place

We were lucky enough to be guests of Bannisters at Rick’s beach house. A character-filled 60's style coastal retreat with stunning views over the ocean.

Beautiful large decks surround the house and inside there is everything that you could need for a luxurious stay – large comfortable lounges, open plan living areas and of course a fully equipped chef’s kitchen, designed by Rick, that incorporates two fridges, two dishwashers, a double oven, wine fridge and a galley style counter that opens up to the deck. Magic! On our second night, Dad cooked fresh tuna which we bought from Lucky’s seafood shop earlier in the day. Soo good!

There were 3 lovely bedrooms upstairs including a huge main bedroom and an extra bunk room as well. Downstairs there were 2 bedrooms with bathrooms and kitchenette so perfect for a couple of families to enjoy. Outside in the garden was a fantastic 12 person Jacuzzi which was so amazing to enjoy under the stars while hearing the waves crashing against the rocks.

Staying here at Rick’s you can take full advantage of all facilities at both Bannisters by the Sea and Bannisters Pavilion which is incredibly convenient. On our first night, we ordered pizzas to be delivered from the Bannisters By The Sea poolside bar – they arrived 20 minutes on wooden serving platters by two waiters…impeccable service. There’s also an extremely efficient shuttle bus service between all the venues which we definitely took advantage of so none of us had to worry about having too many wines haha. It was so quick, easy and hassle free!

Everything about our stay was exceptional and we will certainly be staying with Bannisters every time we are down in Mollymook :)

Where we ate

For a little coastal area of NSW, theres some seriously top-notch dining spots that we absolutely loved. I mentioned the amazing dining options at Bannisters above so here are the other places we visited on our stay:

Take a short drive out of town to Woodstock to visit this sustainable wholefoods cafe in an old cheese factory. Milk Haus aims to deliver fresh, honest, simple fare, free of anything artificial. Good food that makes you feel energised and alive.
We had such a delicious lunch here and will definitely be going back next time we are in town!

A laid-back surfer vegetarian café by day, at night it turns into a bustling Mexican restaurant. We enjoyed a beautiful breakfast outside on a superb Autumn morning. Great coffee & delicious food. Perfect! Next time we will definitely be going back for the burgers – they sound sensational!

WOW! I’ll be posting a seperate post on our incredible visit to Cupitt’s but this magical spot certainly needs to be at the top of your list for the area! Cupitt’s encompasses a microbrewery, winery & cellar door, cheesemaking room, charming cottage accommodating four people, a café and Cupitt’s Kitchen restaurant. It’s inspiring being there! Can’t wait to share more about our amazing time there! (Check back soon)

What To do

You can kind of do as little or as much as you want in this beautiful part of NSW! There's so much natural beauty and adorable towns that it makes it hard to want to sit still and do nothing haha!

Mollymook Beach
The beaches on the South Coast are so spectacular and Mollymook is no exception! Mum and I got up early to watch the sunrise on the beach one morning and it was the most incredible way to start the day. It’s such a gorgeous beach that you’ll want to spend a good couple of lazy days there! The perfect beach for a long stroll too!

Only a 5 minute drive inland from Mollymook, Milton is such a gorgeous historic town full of atmosphere! It’s full of beautiful boutiques & homeware shops, plus amazing cafes & restaurants. It’s definitely worth spending a relaxing day or two in charming Milton! Also, if you’re in town on the first Saturday of the month, the Milton Village Markets are on.

Go for a swim at Bannisters Pavilion rooftop pool
You can spend an arvo or day here without being a guest and it’s such a magical spot to sit back & relax with a glass of wine and a book! Plus,!
