Mudgee Travel Guide

Mudgee is so incredibly magical & charming with beautiful country scenery as well as some of the most fantastic & picturesque wineries in NSW (and the whole of Australia). We’ve visited a handful of times and have built up a list of our favourite places to go. Every time we’ve visited Mudgee, we’ve only been there for about 2-3 days so there’s still a lot of wineries and restaurants we haven’t been to yet, so that just means we will have to keep going back to be able to keep adding to this list haha!

It’s only a 3.5 hour drive from Sydney so it’s a fantastic weekend getaway from the big city and one you should think about doing asap. If you’re going, here’s where we think you should check out. Let us know if we have missed anything though :)

Mudgee is such a fantastic wine region and has some incredible wineries to visit! We haven't visited all of them but here are some of our absolute favourites that we have checked out:

Logan Wines:
We are major major major fans of Logan! The last time we were in Mudgee we got a full tour of the winery by Peter Logan himself – you can see the feature we did here. The wines are absolutely fantastic & the cellar door is incredibly beautiful! The cellar door is light & airy for the summer time but is also super cosy for the winter as you can sit by the roaring fire with a cheese plate! Win-win! This is a must-visit winery :)

Lowe Wines:
Another absolute must-visit winery. Especially if it’s a magnificent day! There isn’t a better winery in the world when the sun is shining! The setting is so so beautiful, nestled amongst their veggie garden! The wines are organic and are absolutely superb. The Zinfandel is always a cracker! You’ll most likely see the super friendly winemaker, David Lowe, when you’re there – have a chat if you can steal him away from other guests! Get the (seriously amazing) grazing plate while you taste the full flute of wines! You can also pick up bikes and cycle around the beautiful property with a picnic basket. The Zin House is just around the back of the cellar door and from what we hear (we haven’t yet had the opportunity to go) it’s the best lunch spot in Mudgee!

Di Lusso Estate:
We were blown away by this winery! They have Australia’s largest range of Italian wine! It’s such a beautiful setting that we ended up spending a good couple of hours there with the most amazing food platter! While there, also make sure you taste the di Lusso Estate range of extra virgin olive oil & the fresh figs – so yum (when in season Feb-May) as well as many other farm grown and made preserves. There’s a full restaurant too called Cucina di Lusso. We didn’t get the chance to check it out but if their food platter is anything to go off then the food will be amazing!

Wineries Continued:

A few more of our favourites:

Huntington Estate Wines:
Again, Huntington Estate is set in such a beautiful setting. The cellar door isn’t as amazing or comfortable as the above 3 wineries mentioned above, but this is still such a great winery to visit! Especially since the wines are amazing – particularly the red wines!

Robert Stein Winery & Vineyard:
This is a 5-star rated winery by James Halliday and you can see why! It’s really beautiful but it’s the wine that is the winner (as it should be!). This was the first winery we visited on our last adventure to Mudgee and it was a fantastic way to start!

Moothi Estate:
Great little spot to put on your list of wineries to visit, especially since there’s the friendliest cellar door dog, Barney, to say hello to! We ordered the Antipasto plate to have while tasting some beautiful wines and it was sublime. The view is magnificent too!

High Valley Wine & Cheese Co:
We haven’t had the chance to get back to High Valley the past two times we visited Mudgee, but this is such a fantastic spot! High Valley have been producing premium wines for the last 18 years and handmade gourmet cheeses for the last 10 years! The setting is beautiful and they offer a full cafe menu too – it makes for the perfect lunch spot while you’re in Mudgee!

Eat & Drink:

Mudgee is a such a thriving country town in the eating out options.

There’s also an amazing farmers market on every 3rd Saturday of the month and if you’re in need of a caterer then look no further than Mudgee Made (you’ll see the beautiful Mudgee Made team, Tanya & Lara, at the markets too – see our post on Mudgee Made here).

Here are some of our favourite eat & drink spots in the town:

I’ve been for dinner there twice and both times it was absolutely amazing. First time was a hot summers night so we sat out in the breezy courtyard and the second time was a chilly autumn night and we sat in the cosy & brilliantly decorated main room! Both perfect! Combine that with amazing food (think delicious share plates and scrumptious pizzas) & fantastic wine from the region and you are in for a sensational dinner!

Alby & Esters:
You’ll find Alby & Esters at the end of a quaint little alleyway off Market Street. It is beyond adorable and the service is impeccable. We went for breakfast/brunch and were treated to amazing coffee and seriously delicious food from a menu that is refreshingly different to the normal. On Friday & Saturday nights it also turns into a wine bar & from what we got during breakfast hours, we can only imagine how incredible it would be as a wine bar! Total must-visit spot!

Mudgee Brewing Co:
The perfect spot for a mid-afternoon drink spot. We’ve not actually ever eaten any food there but the menus sound really great! We have only ever gone for the beer tasting panels which is enough of a reason to go anyway! The beers are really amazing and the whole process made us feel like we were in Portland, Oregon & the whole Pacific North West of America (aka microbrewery hub of the world). Our favourite is the Mudgee Pale Ale!

Roths Wine Bar:
Great spot for an afternoon or post-dinner wine! We went after dinner at Elton’s and it was a fantastic combo. There is also live music on Thursday, Friday & Saturday nights which makes for a great atmosphere!
